Educators are often told to “be consistent,” “build relationships,” and “hold students accountable,” yet many find that even their best strategies collapse under stress. In this session, Christopher Mukiibi explores why behavior breaks down in classrooms serving students with learning differences, emotional regulation challenges, and trauma histories. He will explain why it is not a failure of effort or care, but a design problem. Drawing from neuroscience, systems thinking, 100+ educator interviews, and over 200 hours of synthesis, you will learn how stress impacts both student behavior and teacher decision-making, why traditional behavior approaches often fail under pressure, and how to design classroom systems that protect dignity, stability, and learning for everyone involved. Chris is a husband, father, high school educator, educational consultant, and author. His work focuses on helping educators understand behavior through the lens of stress, nervous system regulation, and classroom design.
