The Janet W. Lerner Memorial Speaker Series for Parents

 

 

All of the sessions in the series are free thanks to the generosity of the Lerner Family.

All sessions will be virtual via zoom

Dr. Janet W. Lerner is considered the mother of specific learning disabilities and wrote the first seminal textbook on the topic, Learning Disabilities and Related Disabilities, which is now in its 13th edition. She was Professor Emeritus at Northeastern Illinois University where she served as Professor and Chairperson of the Department of Special Education. She received the J.E. Wallace Wallin Special Education Lifetime Achievement Award from the Council for Exceptional Children and was awarded the Romaine P. Mackie Award from the Pioneers Division of CEC. Janet was a longtime active member of the Learning Disabilities Association of America and LDA of Illinois.

Monday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. Dr. Meg Carroll a professor at Saint Xavier University session will be on “The  Hopes and Hassles of Homework: The Parents’ Playbook”

Tuesday, September 27th  at 7:00 p.m. Bruce Liebe is a consultant and former member of the Illinois State Police and former MacMurray College Senior Director of the School of Professional Studies. Topic for this session is “Can Current Behavior Foretell Future Violence: Warning Signs to Watch for in Your Child”

Thursday, November 10th at 7:00 p.m. Susy Woods is a seasoned adult access advocate, former assistive technology and public policy representative, and former accessibility office director. Susy’s session is “How Can Adults with Learning Disabilities Access Services”

Monday, December 5th at 7:00 p.m. Harlie Blauw is a nationally certified school psychologist currently serving students at the Mississippi School of the Arts, a residential high school for artistically gifted students. Dr. Blauw recently completed her doctoral research on the influence of social-emotional learning which is innately embedded in arts education. Topic for this session “Improving Your Child’s Social Skills through the Arts: Navigating Social Situation and Regulating Emotions”
