The definition that will be utilized to determine specific learning disability qualifications is:
Specific learning disability--The individual exhibits a disorder in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in an imperfect ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell, or to do mathematical calculations. Such terms include conditions as perceptual handicaps, brain injury, minimal brain dysfunction, dyslexia, and developmental aphasia. The term does not include individuals who have learning problems which are primarily the result of visual, hearing, or motor handicaps, of mental retardation, of emotional disturbance, or of environmental, cultural, or economic disadvantage.
Eligibility
Applicant must be a resident of the state of Illinois.
The applicant must show evidence of a psychological evaluation and/or an Individual Education Program which indicates that the applicant was diagnosed as having a specific learning disability. Psychological and/or IEP will not be returned.

Special Education Teacher Scholarship Application
Karen Tipp Professional Development Grant
Karen Tipp, a long-time board member of LDA of Illinois passed away in May of 2021. She was a lifelong learner who actively participated in many of the workshops and conferences the organization offered. Karen was a school psychologist in the Chicago Public School System. She had bilingual school psychologist approval because she spoke Hebrew. Karen attended a university in Israel where she learned the language, literature, culture. Karen did psychological assessments to school age Jewish children who were new comers.
This year the Board would like to acknowledge her effort and commitment to supporting children and adults with learning disabilities. A grant is being presented to a team(s) of school psychologists/social workers from a school district or building to attend the Fall Virtual LDA Conference on October 2, 2021. This grant is being funded by monetary gifts made in Karen’s memory to LDA of Illinois. Professional Development Credits will be awarded.
